DSEAR Training Delivery

After carrying out a site DSEAR update OTECSA have been on site at our client in the manufacturing sector providing DSEAR awareness training to their site operations team.

OTECSA Consulting recently partnered with a UK-based manufacturing company to provide tailored DSEAR training delivery. This project aimed to enhance the team’s understanding of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) and how to apply them effectively in their operations.

The Challenge

The client needed a comprehensive training program to address the risks associated with dangerous substances in their manufacturing processes. Although their systems met industry standards, the team required practical guidance to classify hazardous zones, identify potential risks, and implement control measures effectively.

Our Approach

To address the client’s needs, we delivered a customised training program with the following key components:

  • DSEAR Overview: An introduction to the regulations, covering their purpose, scope, and relevance to the client’s operations.
  • Risk Assessment Techniques: We provided methods for identifying and assessing risks related to dangerous substances in their workplace.
  • Practical Hazard Management: Our training included hands-on exercises, enabling participants to classify hazardous areas and understand how to manage ignition risks.
  • Interactive Sessions: Participants were encouraged to share real-world examples, ensuring the training was relevant and engaging.

This combination of theory and practical exercises helped the client’s team apply the knowledge directly to their daily tasks.

The Outcome

The DSEAR training delivery equipped the manufacturing team with the skills to identify and manage risks confidently. Feedback from participants highlighted the practical nature of the training and its immediate relevance to their work.

The company achieved enhanced safety measures, improved compliance, and increased confidence in their ability to manage hazardous substances. This project demonstrates OTECSA’s commitment to delivering impactful, customized training solutions.

Focus on Key Site Risks

By using examples of DSEAR scenarios and HAC drawings for a client site, we focus the course content on real life situations the delegates are familiar with. In this case we explained key methods to maintain basis of safety:

  • Responsibility of operators to identify equipment failures
  • Housekeeping requirements for handling of flammables and dusts
  • Close working relationship with third party companies delivering flammables to site
  • Safe storage of flammable materials on site
  • Maintenance of ventilation (extraction systems)

Course Content Structure

After an overview of the regulations, responsibilities and key site risks, our course also delves into other key requirements of the DSEAR Regulations including:

  • Competence of personnel
  • Emergency procedures and management

This is followed by a module test to ensure personnel have gained the key learnings required to keep up their awareness of DSEAR.
