MEIRA Studies

Mechanical Equipment Ignition Risk Assessments

OTECSA Consulting have completed various MEIRA studies in the process industries, assessing clients legacy mechanical equipment ignition risks in ATEX zoned areas. Examples have included:

  • A large pharmaceutical production facility with a pre-DSEAR equipment compliance gap. This resulted in a saving, avoiding the client having to replace a lot of old equipment with the implementation of some simple improvements to detect failures.

  • A manufacturing client having to assess equipment because of a newly zoned solid handling process.

  • A chemical manufacturing site dealing with legacy equipment compliance gaps.

Why carry out MEIRA Studies?

Mechanical Equipment Ignition Risk Assessments (MEIRA) are essential for identifying potential ignition sources in mechanical equipment within ATEX-zoned hazardous areas. At OTECSA Consulting, we conduct MEIRA studies in line with British Standard BS EN 80079-36:2016 to ensure compliance with DSEAR regulations.

Mechanical ignition sources – such as hot surfaces, sparks, and static electricity – are often overlooked until they cause incidents. Our MEIRA studies assess these risks, especially in legacy equipment installed before DSEAR implementation. By identifying credible ignition sources during normal operations and foreseeable failures, we help clients implement measures to mitigate these risks.

For example, we assisted a large pharmaceutical production facility with a pre-DSEAR equipment compliance gap. Our MEIRA study resulted in significant savings by avoiding the replacement of old equipment through simple improvements to detect failures. Similarly, we supported a manufacturing client in assessing equipment for a newly zoned solid handling process, ensuring safety and compliance.

By engaging our MEIRA services, clients can achieve compliance with DSEAR regulations and potentially avoid costly equipment replacements. Our expertise ensures that mechanical equipment operates safely within hazardous areas, protecting both personnel and assets.
