Empowering Celtic Renewables with Comprehensive DSEAR Training and Safety Assessments for Sustainable Operations

Celtic Renewables in Grangemouth are a start-up green production facility. Through their unique production process they turn waste products from the distillery and farming industries into acetone, butanol and ethanol products. 

As part of the scale up of their operations from lab scale, OTECSA Consulting have been engaged at various stages to carry out process hazard assessments such as HAZOP and LOPA as well as other risk assessments such as DSEAR Risk Assessment and Hazardous Area Classification for their Grangemouth Demonstration Plant.  The Demonstration Plant was built to prove the commercial viability of the acetone, butanol and ethanol production and distillation process from waste streams such as pot ale (from distilleries) and potatoes (from farming). 

As part of the risk assessment for any new process operation, suitable and sufficient risk assessment must be carried out. OTECSA personnel were involved with the initial design risk assessments – HAZID hazard identification studies at FEED design and HAZOP – hazard and operability studies at detailed design stage were carried out to understand the operational hazards and assess design safeguards and other mitigations.

Following the design process OTECSA were then engaged to carry out layers of protection (LOPA) studies for high severity events such as tank overfill and distillation column overpressure protection systems. LOPA is a key study to carry out on high hazard sites where instrumented systems provide safety critical functions.   

OTECSA were also engaged to carry out a DSEAR Risk Assessment and Hazardous Area Classification for the plant.  DSEAR is required wherever there is combustible dust material or flammable liquids, vapours or gases either handled or produced.  In this case, the fermentation and distillation processes were relevant to DSEAR and needed careful assessment to calculate zoned areas to allow for correct selection of ATEX Rated equipment, as well as understanding site DSEAR controls to minimise risks to personnel from fire and explosion scenarios. 

OTECSA are proud to have also trained the site operations team on DSEAR awareness following these studies, to ensure everyone working on site is aware of the place they play in managing fire and explosion hazards which could occur from operations.
