Process Safety In Gin Production

Supporting the Production Team In DSEAR, Hazardous Area Classification, HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA & More

We are proud to have worked with one of the worlds most iconic gin brands Hendricks and many are unaware that this delicious spirit is distilled in the heart of Ayrshire, Scotland. Gin production takes place on the same site as other iconic brands including blended and malt whiskies. It has been distilled to produce it’s distinctive flavours for many years on the same and has recently undergone significant production capacity increases.

The operations include hand crafted aspects related to careful addition of a blend of botanicals to the distilling process to give it’s unique flavours. The stillhouse uses two different types of stills to create the final products. These differing shapes and botanical addition points with final products are combined in the perfect combination to make the world famous gin that it is.

OTECSA Consulting are proud to have supported various expansion projects on the iconic gin production distillery including:

  • The move from a previous gin palace building to a new purpose built distillery on the site. For this project we provided HAZOP and LOPA studies to ensure the risks of the new expanded stillhouse were understood and appropriately mitigated. We also carried out the DSEAR Risk Assessment and Hazardous Area Classification for the new stillhouse to ensure fire and explosion risks are understood. Best practices in the handling of flammable materials are followed and ignition sources are controlled in hazardous areas.
  • The expansion of the new stillhouse to further expand production capacity. For this expansion projects we again provided HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, DSEAR and HAC studies to help the project team navigate the compliance requirements for this much larger distillery operation.

We are delighted to continue to support the Hendrick’s production team as they produce this world famous spirit in the beautifully designed new gin palace. We can’t wait to see what comes next on the site, following the repurposing of the previous gin palace as a brand new pilot plant distillery, where we have also supported with the key process safety studies: HAZOP, LOPA, DSEAR and HAC.
