Process Safety For Irish Distilleries

Our work in process safety takes us all over the UK and Europe.  As experts in the whisky industry OTECSA are proud to support manufacturers of whisky products not just in Scotland but also in Ireland, where we have been supporting the Tullamore Irish Grain and Pot Malt distillery in County Offaly for several years. 

The site has undergone rapid expansion in recent years, with the establishment of a grain distillery and pot and malt distillery on the same site.  Following this the site has grown further with tank farms, filling stores, a bottling hall and cask warehousing facilities. 

OTECSA personnel were first engaged at the site on the new continuous grain distillation process which takes malt and barley from whole grain, all the way through the milling, mashing, fermentation and distillation processes to produce the famous whiskey product. 

As part of the design process to ensure risks were suitably risk assessed, we carried out HAZOP and LOPA studies on site in Tullamore over several weeks with the operations team and designers.  Following this we have been further involved in the site with project modification support, carryout out other HAZOP studies as well as hazardous area classification updates. 

In 2022 OTECSA supported further by providing bespoke site training, to help ensure site operations and management teams were kept up to date with the latest requirements in line with the Control of Major Accident Hazards (CoMAH) regulations.  We also carried out retrospective HAZOP studies and provide remote and on site HAZOP and LOPA study support for the projects teams. 

In line with the requirement to keep risk assessments up to date, OTECSA have continued to support the distillery with further retrospective risk assessments, as well as incorporating new project work into the existing risk assessments.
