In 2024 OTECSA were engaged by a bespoke machinery manufacturer based in Scotland to support them on machinery ATEX aspects of design, and HAZOP support. The client approached OTECSA by referral from another client, based on our reputation of expertise in ATEX. While considering the design of a new machinery process including chemical handling, application to media, heating and drying the client identified a gap in their skillset that needed process safety expertise.

As an experience manufacturer of complex manufacturing machines, our client was no stranger to incorporating different regulations into their design.  However with the presence of a highly flammable liquids new challenges emerged related to ATEX zoning and process safety hazards.

With our expertise across process operations and the use of flammables across industry sectors, from lab scale and pilot plant operations to large chemical plants, OTECSA provided the perfect partner to help with ATEX and HAZOP challenges.

Process Safety for Machinery ATEX

Our scope began with concept phase DSEAR and ATEX support, providing risk assessment and zone classification of the concept design.  As well as developing the hazardous area classification for the machinery we also provided optioneering solutions to help the client understand how improvements in containment, ventilation and temperature control could limit ATEX zones.

As well as ATEX and DSEAR support we also facilitated a design HAZOP, to assess the process equipment and ensure deviations from normal operation were developed and understood.  The client took valuable learnings away, as well as implementing recommendations at the detail design phase to ensure the safety of the machinery.

During the detailed design phase OTECSA also supported with ad-hoc engineering support, providing process, process safety and compliance guidance to ensure smooth delivery of this complex machinery manufacturing project.
