Last month, OTECSA Consulting successfully completed an onshore oil and gas HAZOP for a client in England, supporting a new CAPEX project on a long established operational site.
Following previous projects delivering COMAH reporting support, environmental compliance input, and a two day HAZOP across the client’s gathering systems, our team was invited back to provide further hazard study support. Supporting Asset Replacement on a Mature Site
This project focused on replacing ageing legacy assets with improved design three phase separators and knock out vessels. While the scope was clearly defined, the study presented challenges commonly associated with mature sites.
The facility had evolved significantly over several decades. Current operational throughput differed from the original design basis, requiring careful consideration of deviations, operating envelopes, and potential new hazards introduced by the upgraded equipment.
Managing Change Through an Onshore Oil and Gas HAZOP
A key objective of the onshore oil and gas HAZOP was to support effective management of change. By engaging closely with both the design team and experienced site operators, we ensured that historic knowledge, current operating practices, and future design intent were all captured during the study.
The HAZOP provided targeted recommendations and design checks to support safe installation and operation of the new equipment, while avoiding unnecessary or impractical safeguards.
