In the first week in January, four of our process safety team took part in a 4 day hazard study leadership training course, delivered by Method Safety and Security.

Building on the long term professional relationship we have with the training facilitator David Sparkes CEng FIChemE PPSE, this course ensures that all of our regular HAZOP facilitators and scribes are up to date with the best practices for delivering hazard studies.

Vhari Shanks, David Watts, Molly Munro and Arthur Morris took part in the course to further develop and refine their study facilitation and participation skills. For our customers, we can offer more trained and experienced facilitators as we continue to grow our expertise at OTECSA Consulting.

This adds to the existing trained hazard study leaders in the OTECSA team – Owen Llanwarne, John Speirs, Alistair Wilson and Ryan Roche.

Vhari had this to say:

I have attended many hazard studies over the years as a member and a scribe. This extensive training program in leading a hazard study has equipped me with the advanced skills required to be a Hazard Study Leader. I look forward to putting these skills into practice

With the expansion of OTECSAs client based and geographical spread of work, having more qualified hazard study leaders is a real asset to our business. Owen Llanwarne, Managing Director said this:

Having been given a chance to develop as a hazard study leader early in my career, I’m passionate about giving our aspiring leaders the opportunity to move into this area. Being a hazard study leader brings together all the skills we develop as process safety engineers and it is fantastic to see our team take the next step and help mentor them through the facilitation process.

Our experience with hazard studies

OTECSA provides process safety services to industrial clients providing hazard study leadership, risk assessment and process safety consulting. We can advise on and facilitate all hazard study stages which includes HAZID, HAZOP and the aligned Layers of Protection Analysis studies. Our team has a combined experience of well over 100 years of process, safety and risk consulting and we cover the UK and beyond with our diverse skillset and industry experience.

As well as hazard studies for new processes or modifications, we also have experience in retrospective HAZOPs and HAZOP reviews. These studies are always tailored to the individual process to get the best out of the team and the information available, to keep your hazard studies up to date. Industry good practice is that you should review your HAZOP every five years.

As well as the serious nature of the course, the team had a lot of fun!
