Building a Safe Foundation – DSEAR Precious Metal Mining
In early 2020, we kicked off a project with a precious metal mining company to provide process safety support for their new build ore extraction and processing site.
Our initial scope was a preliminary DSEAR risk assessment with Hazardous Area Classification to assess fire and explosion risks in the processing building of their proposed new site.
This focused on two areas of the ore processing site; the outdoor area for storage and handling of bulk flammable materials, and an internal area which houses flammable solvents and chemicals to aid with the extraction process.
By getting involved at the pre commissioning stage, we had the opportunity to input in to the design and make a real impact in the safe running of the site.
Our experience in the application of DSEAR requirements goes beyond the risk assessment. We also delivered a suite of procedures including:
- Handling flammable substances
- Spill response
- Firefighting strategy
- Signage requirements
- Secondary containment designs
