Distillery DSEAR

OTECSA ensures DSEAR compliance for Benriach Distillery, enhancing safety across their Speyside distilleries and bottling plant.

Benraich GlenDronach Glenglassaugh

The Benriach Distillery Company is one of OTECSA key clients in the whisky industry sector. The company includes three malt distilleries in Speyside, Scotland as well as a bottling plant in Newbridge, Edinburgh.  The company is owned by Brown Forman, who also own famous brands such as Jack Daniels. As part of our work with Benriach Distillery we have helped the company with regulatory compliance at their three Scottish distilleries: Glenglassaugh, Glendronach and Benriach, as well as at their Newbridge site and a Jack Daniels site in the Netherlands.

OTECSA first became involved with Benriach in our first few years as a company. We were initially engaged to carry out DSEAR Risk Assessment and hazardous area classification updates for the Newbridge facility. This site includes tanker operations, vatting operations (tank farms) and bottling operations in a large site near Edinburgh. Following the success of our work at Newbridge we were also engaged to carry out DSEAR and HAC studies at their three distilleries in Scotland.

Ongoing Work

After working together successfully, Benriach Distillery Company became OTECSAs first process safety retainer client. We have been retained on this basis since 2023, to provide ongoing process safety and HSE compliance support. This arrangement has allowed Benriach to have quick responses to queries. They work closely with our team to carry out site risk assessments on new projects and existing operations.

As well as the initial work on DSEAR for distilleries and HAC we have since gone on to carry out full site HAZOP studies. These keep their risk assessments up to date, as well as providing DSEAR and HAC awareness training for their site operations teams. OTECSA have also provided more specialist services such as Occupied Buildings Risk Assessment studies (OBRA) for the sites and environmental studies such as Major Accident To The Environment (MATTE) studies which are all required under the CoMAH regulations.
