In some situations, an ATEX-rated vacuum is required to ensure safe operation in hazardous areas.

Why Standard Cleaning Methods Can Be Dangerous
Methods like sweeping with brushes or using compressed air may seem convenient, but they create airborne dust clouds. These clouds can ignite if exposed to a spark, hot surface, or electrostatic discharge which significantly increases the risk of a dust explosion.
Vacuum cleaning avoids this issue by removing dust without dispersing it into the air.
When an ATEX-Rated Vacuum Cleaner Is Required
Because vacuum cleaners are powered by electric motors, they can generate ignition sources, including:
- Electrical sparks
- Overheating components
- Thermite sparks from contact between incompatible materials
- Electrostatic discharge
If the vacuum cleaner is used inside an ATEX-classified zone, it must be ATEX-rated for the specific zone to ensure safe operation.
When a Standard (Non-ATEX) Vacuum Cleaner May Be Acceptable
If you are cleaning combustible dust outside an ATEX zone, a non-ATEX vacuum may be acceptable, but only with strict precautions:
Recommended
- Use a commercial vacuum cleaner, not a domestic unit, for durability and reliability.
- Prefer machines where airflow does not pass over the motor.
- If using a vacuum where the air does pass through the motor, choose one with at least two (ideally three) filters in series to prevent dust reaching the motor.
- Use earthed metallic tools to reduce electrostatic ignition risks.
- If wire-reinforced hoses must be used, ensure the wire is earthed and sits inside the hose bore.
Avoid
- Domestic vacuum cleaners. They are not suitable for industrial combustible dust.
- Tools made from aluminium, which can create thermite sparks against rusty steel.
- Picking up wet materials with a dry vacuum. This damages filters and may expose the motor.
- Vacuuming smouldering, hot, or burning materials.
- Allowing dust collectors to overfill. Ensure regular emptying and maintenance.
