At OTECSA Consulting, we are a process safety consultancy with offices in Glasgow, Grangemouth, Aberdeen, Dundee and Cornwall. We provide engineering and technical safety expertise to clients in the process industries; specialising in HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, DSEAR and Hazardous Area Classification. This includes chemicals, pharmaceuticals, distilled spirits, petrochemicals, energy from waste and manufacturing.

In addition to our Process Safety expertise, our background in Process Engineering and Project Engineering means we can assist clients through what can sometimes be the daunting prospect of outsourcing specialist technical, compliance and design assurance studies.

OTECSA Consulting was established in 2018 by Owen Llanwarne, who brought over a decade of experience in chemical operations, project management, equipment manufacturing, process engineering design, and process safety consulting.

Owen, a Chartered Chemical Engineer since 2012 with a first-class master's degree from the University of Edinburgh, maintains his technical expertise through continuous accredited training. With 15 years of experience, he's a skilled process and process safety consultant with a diverse background that includes petrochemical plant operations, upstream oil and gas product development, and project engineering. Before specialising in process safety, Owen spent seven years at a design house, contributing significantly to his field expertise.
Alistair joined Otecsa in March 2021 as a Chartered Chemical Engineer, boasting 14 years in upstream oil & gas, with involvement from concept to commissioning. His expertise extends to pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, midstream oil & gas, nuclear, and CCUS projects. He has contributed as a flow assurance consultant and software developer for corrosion prediction, advancing to subsea processing technology development and excelling in process design leadership and study management.
Ryan Roche, an MSc in Process Safety graduate from the University of Aberdeen, joined OTECSA in September 2020 after studying Chemical Engineering for five years. Since joining, he has been applying theoretical knowledge to practical process safety challenges, aiding the team in delivering expert services to clients. In 2023, Ryan's commitment and experience in hazard studies and DSEAR Risk Assessments earned him a promotion to Process Safety Engineer, where he has begun to lead numerous studies - showcasing his hard work and dedication.
Jill joined Otecsa in early 2021, bringing her business development and marketing skills to the team. Her role broadened in 2022 with the expansion of our HSE consulting services for clients.
She now heads the HSE Consulting division, focusing on incident investigation, auditing, and process safety management system support. With extensive experience in the Oil and Gas and Energy sectors, Jill has previously served as a technical authority for environmental engineering with a major EPC contractor and as HSE manager for oil industry service companies.
John joined Otecsa in 2022, reuniting with former colleague Owen from their time at Engenda Group. His career began in 1993 at ICI Grangemouth, engaging in batch chemical manufacturing for Pharma, Agrochem, Fine Chemicals, and Biotech sectors. In 2005, John shifted to a Project EPC organisation, founding and leading a team of 15 process engineers who over 17 years, managed hundreds of projects including conceptual design, FEED, detailed design, commissioning, start-up, and manufacturing support. John is an approved HAZOP chair with expertise in LOPA, DSEAR Risk Assessment, Hazardous Area Classification according to BS and EI15, and Pressure Relief.
Arthur joined Otecsa in August 2023, fresh from his graduation from a Masters in Chemical Engineering from Strathclyde University.
During his studies Arthur had a spell working as a summer student at West Fraser, Inverness and in his short time with Otecsa so far has been involved in HAZOPs, DSEAR studies and novel hydrogen technology projects.
Vhari joined OTECSA in August 2024 as a Senior Process Safety Engineer. Vhari has worked as a process engineer for an upper tier COMAH ink manufacturer and in engineering consulting roles since graduation from The University of Strathclyde in 2007 with a Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering. Vhari has experience in process design, operations, plant troubleshooting and a particular interest in control system automation and layers of protection analysis (LOPA).
Molly joined OTECSA in July 2024 as Graduate Process Safety Engineer. She graduated from the University of Strathclyde in 2022 with a Bachelors Degree in Chemical and Process Engineering, after which she embarked on a 6 month backpacking trip around South East Asia. Previous to joining OTECSA, Molly worked as a Field Engineer in the mobile water treatment industry for Ecolutia Services.
Archie joined OTECSA in 2025 as a Process Safety Engineer. Having graduated from the University of Strathclyde in 2022 with a MEng in Chemical Engineering, he spent the first 3 years of his career with William Grant & Sons working on capital projects across multiple distilleries and upper tier COMAH sites. Archie has experienced process design, equipment specification and commissioning through both small scale upgrade projects and major distillery expansions.
David joined OTECSA in October 2025 following over 20 years working in the batch chemical manufacturing sector. His roles at the facility producing inks and toners in Grangemouth he went from Process Engineer to Environmental and Compliance Manager and most latterly Head of SHE. David has particular experience in COMAH upper tier environments, environmental compliance including CDOIF and MATTE assessments, and hazard study leadership.
Cathal joined OTECSA in July 2026. Cathal has recently graduated from the The University of Edinburgh with a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
As part of his studies, he spent 6 months at Earls Gate Waste Treatment in Grangemouth where he worked with one of the OTECSA team during a project. Cathal has also previously worked at a seaweed processing site in the Outer Hebrides.
Cathal is also native speaker of Scottish Gaelic.
