Supporting a Growing Scottish Manufacturing Leader

Ensuring Safety and Compliance in Aluminium Pigment Production with DSEAR, HAZOP, and tailored Risk Assessments.

OTECSA is proud to support key, growing Scottish manufacturing sites. One such facility is Metaflakes state of the art production facility in Fife, Scotland where aluminium pigment products are produced in a variety of production processes, as well as carrying out research and development and product development activities.

Metaflake was formed in 1996 as a small operation producing aluminium pigment products using a water based technology.  This developed quickly into a production facility with a worldwide customer base, driven by the unique products and novel production methods.

Metaflake, specialists in aluminium pigments, have engaged OTECSA Consulting at various stages in the past decade to provide process safety support for their growing manufacturing facility, including in the areas of general site health and safety, DSEAR Compliance, HAZOP, permit to work support and project support.

Metaflake products are used throughout the world as aluminium pigment in products such as car parts and other manufacturing processes.  The production of aluminium pigment can involve hazardous chemicals and processes as well as industrial machinery and manual operations.  Metaflake have developed greener production processes, reducing the reliance on solvent based production to focus on water based production.

As part of their site expansions Metaflake have engaged OTECSA at various stages to assist with project risk assessments such as HAZOP, DSEAR and Hazardous Area Classification.

DSEAR Risk Assessments and Hazardous Area Classification are required for combustible dust materials such as aluminium dust, as well as flammable liquids and gases.  By taking a pragmatic and practical approach to DSEAR OTECSA were able to offer sensible methods for risk mitigation and management, to help Metaflake comply with the DSEAR Regulations.

As part of site expansions and new processes, OTECSA facilitated several HAZOP studies at design stage to help Metaflake understand their operating and production risks from these new processes.

OTECSA have also been engaged to provide DSEAR awareness training and Permit to Work training to operations and management staff.  It has been fantastic to see a local Scottish manufacturing company thrive and expand their production through new novel technologies and greener production methods.
